Union win on medication pay at Opal HealthCare

Union win on medication pay at Opal HealthCare

Monday 2 February, 2026

Union members at Opal HealthCare have secured an important win following union action and negotiations arising from a dispute in the Fair Work Commission.

  • A new higher paid ‘Specialist’ classification will be introduced for qualified AINs and PCWs who regularly perform medication shifts and are required to hold a Certificate IV (or equivalent above Certificate III).
  • Workers who are not reclassified but perform medication shifts will be paid at the higher Specialist rate through higher duties — no one goes backwards.
  • The existing medication allowance will be removed, with higher classification rates delivering stronger and more reliable pay outcomes.
A big congratulations to all members involved! Opal will shortly issue formal documents, and members will be asked to vote on the proposed variation during the access period.
