Your New Awards: Important Update

Your New Awards: Important Update

Friday, 7 November 2025

As you know, there are some changes coming into effect with the new Awards. Please see below a quick update on progress.

  1. Your pay rise and backpay

Pay rises and backpay (to first full pay period on or after 1 July) are coming through in pay cycles this week and the next.

  1. Higher grade duties paid after three days (previously five days)

 Payable from 1 December 2025.

  1. Ten-hour rest period between rostered shifts

This right to a proper break between rostered shifts will come into effect from February 2026.
The HSU and Ministry of Health are in negotiations about what process will be used when a department wishes to maintain an eight-hour break between shifts.

  1. Three-day limitation on and pay-out of excess ADO balances

This will take effect from 1 May 2026.
Please note: there have been reports of some managers saying if a fourth ADO accrues after 1 May 2026 this will “disappear”. This is not true. HSU members will not do unpaid work! HSU members will not be punished for management's failure to recruit sufficient staff or poor rostering practices.

  1. Shift and weekend work provisions for Health Managers

HSMs will be able to work shift work from 1 December 2025. For existing employees this can only be by consent.

  1. Requirement for 4 weeks’ notice of roster changes

From 1 December 2025 members will get four weeks' notice of roster changes.

  1. Progressive accrual of annual leave

Annual leave is scheduled to accrue progressively from February 2026.
You can read correspondence from the Ministry of Health about timelines here. If you have any questions, please reach out to memberservices@hsu.asn.au or contact your local organizer.
