NSW Ambulance is trying to formalise annual leave business rules that were never agreed to and never consulted on.

The 2026 annual leave business rules document provided to the HSU continues to spark concern:
  • Your annual leave approval would be considered against zone and sector thresholds;
  • There is no understanding of what the minimum or maximum thresholds are; and
  • NSWA are attempting to formalise practises that were never consulted on.
Members would be aware of the frustrations while attempting to take their well-deserved leave, with rigid rules in place and further restrictions on how many people are allowed to take leave.

We have constantly fought against the rigid rules, as we know paramedics have leave rejected but then remain supernumerary to their station instead of being home with their families.

HSU delegates and members met with NSWA to discuss these issues, but in usual fashion it does not appear that member voices have been heard.

Despite commitment from NSW Ambulance to provide delegates with a document for review and consultation, NSWA have now said that they are not required to consult because they are not seeking to change anything – they believe they can slowly change processes without consultation and that allows them to forgo consultation.

ADHSU has invoked status quo as ADHSU members deserve to have a say in how their leave will be managed - we will not accept the formalisation of processes that have been forced on our members.

NSWA has now asked for a meeting, as they claim they are unaware why ADHSU members are so concerned - this is members’ leave, members’ fatigue, members’ WHS entitlements.

Until NSW Ambulance meet their requirement to consult on how leave is managed and allow ADHSU members to have their say, they cannot continue to enforce, let alone formalise these practises.
