DHM shiftworker win!

DHM shiftworker win!

Friday 27 February, 2026

After more than a year of negotiations, HSU members at DHM have secured a fair definition of “shiftworker” - and the impact is significant.

THIS IS WHAT COLLECTIVE ACTION WON

The new definition sets a precedent for almost everyone who regularly performs shiftwork. DHM members have achieved:
  • Back-pay for members previously misclassified
  • Correct shiftworker allowances paid going forward

This happened because members were persistent, stood together and refused to accept an outcome that left workers behind. A petition from impacted staff showed strength of feeling and forced DHM to shift from its inadequate position.

This win sends a clear message: when workers organise, employers respond. It’s a step toward a stronger, more organised union across private pathology.

WHAT’S NEXT

  • DHM employees should receive backpay over the next few weeks. It is important to compare DHM’s calculations with your own, to ensure you receive the correct backpay amount for the last 6 years. Disagree with your backpay? Contact Andrei for support on the details below.
  • With this milestone secured, the focus now turns to part-time overtime payments - another area where members are being short-changed. More details are coming soon.
