St Vincent’s Public Hospital Union Win – Permanent Social Work Position Secured

St Vincent’s Public Hospital Union Win – Permanent Social Work Position Secured

Thursday 14 May, 2026

Following feedback from HSU members in relation to a proposed change involving a Social Work position changing from a permanent fulltime position to a fixed-term contract position exclusively for new graduates, management has written to confirm the position will remain permanent.

  • This is a great win for HSU social work members who came together to ensure their concerns were heard by management.
  • The steps taken ensured SVHS honoured the provisions of the EBA which clearly highlight that permanent jobs should always be favoured over fixed-term contracts, unless specific and limited circumstances apply.
  • As a result, there will be no downgrade or change to the employment status which protects the stability and provides the recognition that HSU social workers deserve.
SVHS confirmed they plan to close the consultation and will shortly be sending our communications to that effect.

This outcome demonstrates the power of standing together.

When members raise issues early and speak with one voice, we achieve meaningful results that protect jobs and strengthen conditions.
