Dear member,
The HSU was informed over the weekend that the Body Worn Cameras have been extended by six months!
Last week, HSU members reported an email that was sent out by the Ministry of Health to the body worn camera trial sites. Members were advised that as of 1500hrs on Monday 25 May 2026 the licenses will be de-activated and cameras will go offline and cannot be worn. The same email outlined some benefits of the cameras: reduction in verbal abuse, spitting, property damage and threats.
Prior to this email being sent from the Ministry of Health, HSU members were not consulted about this decision to cease the trial and concerns were immediately raised directly with the Health Minister's office.
Due to members’ actions the trial has now been extended. Future use will be informed by on-going assessment and evaluation.
Further advice from the Ministry of Health states that evaluation is being completed by Charles Sturt University and will be finalised in May 2026. The Ministry is preparing an options paper considering future use.
Commitment has been sought from the Minister’s office and Ministry of Health to ensure that members will be consulted as part of the evaluation and options paper for future use, prior to decisions being made.
Congratulations to the members who reported the original email proposing to withdraw the trial. Members will be informed as we progress toward formal consultation on the future use of the body worn cameras.
For any questions or to find out more, please reach out to your HSU Organiser/Delegate or your Member Services Division on 1300 478 679.
