Mental Health Unit HASA Changes at Shellharbour Hospital
Thursday 2 April, 2026
Dear member,
A change to the usual practice of HASA’s in the Mental Health Unit at Shellharbour Hospital is being proposed by Illawarra Shoalhaven LHD (ISLHD). This is your opportunity to have a say on how this affects you.
- This proposal comes after a recent revision to the Model of Care for the Adolescent Inpatient Mental Health Unit (AIMHU) which brought the unit in-line with state-wide requirements.
- The district undertook consultation with nursing staff and it has been identified that the HASA from Mirrabook and Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit do not currently undertake rounding to the AIMHU.
- This change in practice would see the HASA’s employed to assist the MHS do regular rounds to the AIMHU (at minimum every 3 hours for each 12 hour shift), which would ensure there is only a periodic presence.
